Flooding 11 May 2016

Part of Loampit Vale, close to our site, flooded in the early hours of the 11 May. This resulted in the closure of part of Loampit Vale close to the roundabout (overnight between 2am and 8am on Wednesday 11 May) and disruption to the DLR.

Loampit Vale, Lewisham Way, the DLR and railway stations were reopened by 8am yesterday (11 May).

It’s been reported that half a month’s rain fell overnight. This has also caused flooding elsewhere in the region and disruption to other railway services.

We take such matters close to our site very seriously and our construction team was in touch with the Environment Agency about the flooding straight away, they’re investigating the matter and will be closely monitoring the situation on the ground going forward. We took all necessary measures to limit the flooding’s impact.

Update to the final road layout completion date

The new road layout in Lewisham is now planned for completion late Summer 2016. There have been restrictions imposed in diverting utility services as originally planned and beyond our control, which have contributed to the delay to the delivery of these complex infrastructure works.

On Monday 15 February 2016, we’ll be carrying out work on a water main adjacent to the Quaggy and Lewisham Road. The work needs to be completed in one continuous session, which means we will have to work past our usual finishing time of 7pm by up to four hours. The work includes installing support barriers, installing a new pipe, testing and commissioning. We aim to complete the noisiest work as early as possible to reduce any impact. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause.

Essential pavement closure – Wednesday 2 September

From the morning of Wednesday 2 September we will be closing the section of pavement on Loampit Vale, close to the DLR station. This closure will remain in place until work to the road network is completed early next year.

The closure is necessary to complete the culvert for the River Ravensbourne and create the new pedestrianised area at the heart of Lewisham Gateway. To ensure a safe and smooth transition, marshalls will be positioned along key points to direct pedestrians to the approved route along Station Road. Additional signage will be placed around the area to help commuters navigate around the closed pavement. Pedestrians going to and from the town centre and the DLR/railway stations will need to use the stretch of pavement on Station Road between Lewisham Road and Lewisham station.

Click here for a map showing the new pedestrian route along the Station Road

The bus stops outside the station have already been closed, with bus users directed to the Police Station bus stops instead. Once the highways works are complete, the stops outside the Police Station will close and buses will return to Station Road, outside the DLR and along Molesworth Street.

Traffic Change from 26 August

From 26 August traffic around Lewisham’s old roundabout will make its final major change before the highways are due to be completed by spring next year.

The spur road running between Molesworth Street and Lewisham Road will shut, with a newly aligned road created to the south of the DLR station.

Access to the stations and bus stops won’t be affected.

Click here for a map showing the road layout from 26 August.

Essential night-time work

From Wednesday 19 August 2015 to Tuesday 25 August 2015, we will be carrying out essential works to connect the new section of Loampit Vale into the existing road. A lane closure will be put in place on the eastbound carriageway of Loampit Vale to facilitate these works.

From Tuesday 25 August, the whole gyratory will temporarily be reduced to a single lane to complete these works. In order to avoid any additional impact on this already busy road, works will be carried out overnight. To minimise disturbance, we will stop our noisier works at 11pm each night and will not be carrying out any work over the weekend of the 22 and 23 August 2015.

Changes to pedestrian and bus access from Friday 7 August

There will be suspensions to pavements and bus stops in Lewisham, as we get closer to opening the final road layout for the Lewisham Gateway redevelopment. The changes will be in place until the final road layout is complete in early 2016.

The following services / routes will be affected:

  • From 9pm Thursday 7 August - Bus stops C & D outside the DLR station will be suspended and bus routes will be relocated to Lewisham High Street outside the Police station at bus stops H & J
  • From evening of Friday 8 August – A new section of Station Road will open up to pedestrians, linking Lewisham Station directly with Lewisham Road. The taxi rank will move to this part of Station Road.

Alternative pedestrian routes will be clearly signposted during these works. For a map showing the location of the upcoming works and suspensions, please click here

Update on the road closure at King’s Hall Mews junction with Lewisham Road

Due to the complex nature of our works to build a new road layout around the Lewisham Gateway site, we have had to extend the road closure between King’s Hall Mews junction and Lewisham Road until January 2016. The delay in completing these works has arisen from unforeseen complications with utilities diversions.

Drivers will need to use an alternative route to access Lockmead Road, King’s Hall Mews, St Stephen’s Grove, Cressingham Road, Caterham Road and Boyne Road. Access to these roads will still remain for pedestrians and cyclist during these works.

Works at the Lewisham Road and Lewisham Hill crossing

From Monday 13th July, we will start building a new mini roundabout on the junction between Lewisham Road and Lewisham Hill. As part of the works we will replace the existing traffic island, repave the footpath and replace the pelican crossing next to the Texaco Garage with a new traffic light crossing.

Nearby roads have been sign posted to make sure all road users and pedestrians are aware of the changes.

The works are due to be completed around mid September.

We will be installing a duct crossing, which will provide a passageway for the water system of the new buildings to the east of the DLR. To ensure minimal disruption for both taxi’s and commuters at Station Road, works will only take place during off-peak hours - 10am to 3:30pm. We will be phasing our works, to ensure the road remains open and easily accessible to all.

New section of Molesworth St open 30 March

Click here to see a map showing pedestrian routes around the site.

Although further changes will be taking place over the coming months, this is the last major alteration to the roundabout until highways works are complete in spring 2016.

New section of Molesworth St open to pedestrians – 26 March

On 26 March 2015 the pavement along the new section of Molesworth Street, linking Rennell Street and Loampit Vale opened to pedestrians. This new stretch of pavement creates a clearer, more level route between the stations and town centre.

Click here for a map showing the pedestrian routes around our site.

The new stretch of Molesworth Street is due to open to northbound traffic from 30 March. The change will be clearly signposted and will create an extra two lanes off traffic, making it easier and quicker to travel from Molesworth Street towards New Cross and central London.

From Monday 16 February, we will suspend road access between Lewisham Road and Lewisham High Street, which is slightly to the north of King’s Hall Mews.

This work is to allow us build the new Lewisham Road, as part of our work to create the road layout around the Lewisham Gateway site.

Road users may need to use an alternative route to access Lockmead Road, King’s Hall Mews, St Stephen’s Grove, Cressingham Road, Caterham Road and Boyne Road. While work is taking place, you will no longer be able to drive directly from the section of Lewisham High Street that runs next to the Quaggy onto Lewisham Road.

Changes to Lewisham Roundabout

Construction work to remove the Lewisham roundabout will achieve an important milestone over the weekend of Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January.

From Saturday, roads users will see some changes, as a new road between Molesworth Street and Lewisham High Street will replace the southern section of the roundabout, creating a temporary extended roundabout.

The change for all road users and pedestrians will come into effect from 7pm on Saturday 24 January, and is due to be completed during the night.

All routes and bus services previously provided by the roundabout will continue in a slightly different layout.

These temporary arrangements will remain in place throughout 2015, and have been designed in close co-operation with Transport for London and Lewisham Council to keep Lewisham moving, working and trading during the construction works.

The new road layout and the removal of the roundabout is due to be completed and in use in early 2016.

Signage will be in place to make sure all road users and pedestrians are well aware of the changes, which include new temporary footpaths for pedestrians around the road works.

We have produced two maps – one to show how the change will affect your journey if you are a road user, and one showing how the change will affect pedestrian routes.

Bus Stops Update

From Friday 16 January, we will be re-opening Bus Stop F on Loampit Vale.

As we mentioned in December, we will now close Bus Stop P, near to Lewisham’s clock tower, on Lewisham High Street, from Monday 19 January.

We will also need to close Bus Stops E, H and J, which are also on Lewisham High Street each night between 9pm and 5am from Wednesday 14 January until Monday 19 January.

Once the road layout switch is complete, we will re-open Bus Stop A, relocated to a newly extended part of Lewisham Road, slightly to the south of the railway arches.

Suspension of Bus Stop P – From Monday 5 January 2015

As part of our wider work to rebuild Lewisham’s road layout, we need to suspend Bus Stop P, next to the Lewisham Clock Tower. Bus Stop P is scheduled to be suspended from Monday 5 January 2015 until March 2015. At the same time, we will be re-opening Bus Stop F at Loampit Vale.

There are a number of alternative stops nearby, including the Lewisham Police Station and Molesworth Street stops, which are detailed in this map.

The Clock Tower Taxi Rank – From February

We’ll also permanently relocate the Clock Tower taxi rank to a new, carefully designed rank around 2 minutes walk to the south, at the corner of Lewisham High Street and Lewis Grove. This is scheduled to take place in February 2015. The new rank, currently under construction, will have easy access for all taxi passengers and is closer to the entrance to Lewisham Shopping Centre.

The new rank will be clearly sign-posted and we make sure to update you when we have a fixed date for the switch.

Please see this map for more information, which shows the location of the new rank.

Working hours over the Christmas break

Our contractors will finish all works for 2014 on Tuesday 23 December, and will return to work on Monday 5 January.

Maintenance crews will be monitoring our sites over the break, but this is simply to ensure everything remains safe and secure.

Re-Opening Bus Stop FF

We’re working hard to keep Lewisham’s buses moving. We have recently re-opened Bus Stop FF on Loampit Vale and all services have now resumed.

Upcoming pedestrian route diversion on Loampit Vale

We will soon be carrying out a series of important works on part of the pedestrian route at Loampit Vale from Wednesday 3 December, running for a week until Wednesday 10 December.

During this period, a section of the pavement on the north side of the road running between the junction with Thurston Road and the pedestrian crossing at the junction with Station Road will be inaccessible. Please cross the road at the pedestrian crossings at either Thurston Road or Station Road for the duration of the works.

These works are part of our efforts to install a vital new gas mains, as part of our work to rebuild Lewisham's roads.

Please click here for a map showing the suspended pedestrian route between Wednesday 3 December and Wednesday 10 December.

Emergency response rapidly mobilised on Sunday to minimise the impact of flooding around Loampit Vale.

In central Lewisham localised flooding occurred after ten days worth of rain fell in the borough over just 24 hours.

The flooding occurred in a localised stretch of Loampit Vale between 11am and 4pm on Sunday 23 November, temporarily closing the road to traffic.

An employee of VolkerFitzpatrick registered a flood alert with the Lewisham Gateway site team and the Environment Agency.

Having raised the alarm, extra pumps were quickly put into place to control the flow of the water.

The floods affected Loampit Vale, covering a 100 yard ‘dipped’ area of the road. VolkerFitzpatrick, Lewisham Gateway’s contractors, and the emergency services moved quickly to limit the impact of the floods on the DLR, shops and businesses.

The Lewisham Gateway team and the Environment Agency are currently conducting an investigation, which will identify if the works contributed to the flooding and if so what measures could be put in place to prevent further incidents. In the meantime, the additional pumps will remain on-site.

Changes to Lewisham’s buses – from 29 October and 19 November

From Wednesday 29 October changes to bus stops will affect routes 21, 47, 136, 225, 321, 436 and the N47 heading west and northwest.

From 29 October bus stop E (the Lewisham Police Station stop) next to Rennell Street, will re-open and from 19 November bus stop F (Lewisham Station) located next to Loampit Vale will be suspended.

From 19 November, if you’re taking any of these services running north or westbound and usually use bus stop F (Lewisham Station) you will need to use one of the alternative nearby stops:

  • Bus stop E (Lewisham Police Station) for routes 21, 47, 136, 225, 321, 436 and the N47
  • Bus stop SG (Jerrard Street, Loampit Vale) for routes 21, 136, 321 and 436
  • The Thurston Road Bus stop for routes 47, 225 and N47

We anticipate that bus stop F will re-open in the New Year.

Click here for a map showing where the alternative bus stops are and the bus routes affected.

Temporary suspension of Bus Stop FF - 27–29 October

From 27 to 29 October Bus Stop FF (Lewisham Station) will be temporarily suspended, affecting routes 21 and 436.

Instead of dropping passengers off at Stop FF, buses 21 and 436 will temporarily stop outside the DLR station, which is less than 100 metres from stop FF.

Below is a full list of the nearest alternative stops where passengers will be able to alight:

  • Bus Stops C/D – Outside the DLR
  • Bus Stop SP – Laompit Vale (Jerrard Street)

Bus Stop FF is also used by National Express services. While the suspension is in place, these services will use Bus Stop J (Lewisham Police Station).

Bus stop FF is due to re-open by 30 October.

Click here for a map showing where the alternative bus stops are and the bus routes affected.

Bus stop changes

To allow us to undertake the necessary highways work essential to delivering this important project, Transport for London has suspended bus stop E (outside Lewisham Police Station) and make some further alterations to bus stops on the Lewisham Gateway site:

Bus stop A (Lewisham Station stop [northbound]) is suspended

Bus stop B (Lewisham Station stop [southbound]) is suspended

Bus stop E (one of the Lewisham Police Station stop [northbound]) is suspended until 28 October [now reopened]

Sheet piling works through October 2014

Work on diverting the Rivers Quaggy and Ravensbourne and constructing the new river walls is well underway. This work involves sheet piling which may cause some noise during construction work hours. We anticipate the majority of this phase of piling to be completed by Friday 22 August 2014.

In addition, construction work on the two Phase 1A buildings beside the DLR station will start at the end of August with piling taking place through October 2014. We expect this phase of the works will be less noisy than the sheet piling carried out in August.

Bus stop changes from this Monday 21 July

To allow us to undertake the necessary highways work essential to delivering this important project, Transport for London is suspending some of the bus stops located on our site between 10am and 3:30pm. These include:

21 July to 18 September
The Lewisham High Street bus stops (A and B) - at the top of the High Street (junction with Lewisham Road)

1 August to 31 August
The Loampit Vale bus stops (F and FF) close to the junction with Station Road.

Road works to start on site

Our experienced highways contractor, VolkerFitzpatrick, will be starting the road works on our Lewisham Gateway site from Monday 14 July.

The works include removal of the roundabout and reconfiguration of the roads to allow for future development on the site to deliver more homes, jobs, shops and open spaces.

The works require some lane suspensions though these will be temporary and we will provide clear signage to limit disruption.

The new roads will be built while the roundabout is still in place. As our new roads are completed we will be able to divert traffic onto them before removing any of the old roads. This means that during construction you will be still be able to drive, walk and cycle through the site to get to where you’re going.

We are starting work to the central reservations on our site and the construction of a temporary road alongside Lewisham Road – click here for an online map showing our areas of work.

16 June 2014

Rennell Street Car Park Closure from 16 June

From 16 June Rennell Street Car Park will be permanently closed to allow highways preparations works to begin.

Rennell Street Car park is located on the Lewisham Gateway site and will be removed as work on the site progresses. Work is not due to start immediately and is due to start later in July.

Alternative parking is available at other car parks such as the Lewisham Shopping Centre, Molesworth Street, Slaithwaite Road and Clarendon Rise. See this online map for information.

7 May 2014

From the afternoon of 7 May 2014 to April 2015 the section of Station Road between the DLR Station and Lewisham Road will be closed.

Temporary routes to and from the stations will be signposted. This online map shows the closed section of Station Road and route.

Access to Station Road
From 7 May 2014 until April 2015 only the following vehicles will be able to use station road:
- Taxis
- Those dropping off or picking up passengers with limited mobility
- Emergency and servicing vehicles

Taxi update
From 7 May the current taxi rank will be closed and a new temporary taxi rank created on Station Road, next to the DLR station. The top of the temporary taxi rank will be close to the entrance and exit Lewisham Station, so you’ll be able to get a cab in a similar place to where cabs currently pick up. Further information for taxi drivers is available here.

Dropping off and picking up those with limited mobility
You will continue to be able to pick up and drop off passengers with limited mobility outside Lewisham Station. However access to Station Road will be via Loampit Vale.

14 April 2014

From Monday 14 April we will start putting up hoardings around the site of our first phase of works. The road network and public transport will not be affected and Station Road will remain open. See this online map showing the location of the hoardings.

Initially the hoardings will include posters with information about what is happening. At a later date they will be fully clad with visuals, information on Lewisham Gateway and signage.

Spring 2014

Construction work is expected to start on site. In the coming weeks we plan to close the section of Station Road between the DLR and Lewisham Road. The route will be signposted and you can also click on this online map to see the site and location of the first two new buildings and park.

We will update this page and circulate an update to residents, businesses and other interested parties, with more details ahead of construction work starting. You can register for updates by emailing updates@NewLewisham.com.

11 March 2014

Ground investigation work starts:

  • At the Molesworth Street/Loampit Vale junction
  • On the roundabout island

Work should not affect any travel arrangements. To see a location map of where we’re working click here.

1 March 2014

Preparations start on site:

As a large number of buses use this area it has not been possible for all buses to continue to terminate next to the DLR (at bus stops C, D and F), as doing so would cause unnecessary congestion and pinch points in the area, causing significant delays to services. We have produced an online map showing the bus stop moves – click here to view map.
